…because it’s always a good idea to make software changes on the performance day….
Kevin Schlei, David Collins, Adam Murphy, and Trevor Saint warming up onstage for the Minor Vices performance at UW-Whitewater, March 2, 2014. Light Recital Hall is a beautifully clear acoustic to play in, and our performance of Alligator Char in particular went to some exceptionally patient and spacious new places….
Adam Murphy getting ready to rehearse Alligator Char with Minor Vices. When I made this piece, one of my goals for the design of the cards was to differentiate them visually, so that musicians wouldn’t actually need to read the texts in performance. Ideally, they would recognize the layouts, and that would cue their memory of the precise instructions involved. It pleases me that I can instantly recognize the specific cards in this photograph, even viewed upside down and backwards….
Trying to find ways to articulate some thoughts about Nono’s La Lontananza, and to free up my thinking about the piece as we begin preparing for upcoming performances. The placement of virtually every element in this chart is debatable… but that complexity is part of what makes the piece so compelling.
